Tiktok now has until November 12 to break from its Chinese parent company. Should it actually happen, the founder of a UK-based TikTok collective writes in the guardian how a tiktok ban would hurt kids who’ve built massive followings on the app. “while it’s difficult for anyone to ‘go viral’ with 8,000 followers on Instagram — there is a clear line between who is and isn’t an influencer — people can get millions of views on their content on tiktok regardless of their follower count,” he writes.

Doing More to Support Creators on Instagram
It's hard to imagine Instagram as a platform that focuses so heavily on retail. With the opportunity to purchase products now embedded in IGTV (and soon in reels), it puts even more pressure on users to spend money. The money they may not have. Soon, goofy cat reels might become an advertisement for cat toys. On the other hand, this might be a welcome change for creators. Some retailers use Instagram to build their brand, and these new shopping features may give them another opportunity to grow. Plus, it also gives users the chance to support their favourite creators.
Ultimately, it is content creators who make each platform what it is. Youtube has been able to maintain its dominance in the digital space for years, in part due to its partner program which allows creators to monetize their videos. It’s this program that pulled creators away from vine and onto youtube, where they could be paid for their creative work. In the past, tiktok has functioned more like Instagram in terms of creator support. Content creators could upload sponsored videos or earn money during a live stream, but there was no ongoing monetization program. Rather than share in vine’s fate (which shut down in 2017), TikTok created programs to incentivize creators to remain on its platform.
Tiktok had become somewhat of a sensation in India, so much so that its video content was trickling liberally into Instagram and Twitter too. With the ban, TikTokers were rendered platform-less and were increasingly exploring other options to rebuild their legacies and fame that had come to define Indian TikTok.
